Ava's Downtown Market & Deli

When we first relocated to Mountain View from San Francisco, we chose to live walking distance to downtown.

Living near Castro Street's great restaurants, shops and easy access to Caltrain, meant we could keep a little urban appeal in our new suburban life. But, right away I began missing the corner markets of the city. Well my yearning for a community meeting spot has been satisfied by Ava's Downtown Market & Deli.

The care of owners Juan and Ann is evident throughout the store. Shelves thoughtfully stocked with only the best, such as: Clover Organics, Marianne's Ice Cream, Udi's baked goods and oodles and oodles of amazing fresh produce (loads of which are organic). Their meat department is super too. They feature Marin Sun Farms meats and I even saw marrow bones gracing their display on my last visit.

With the addition of their prepared meals area and full deli, they are quickly becoming the heart of Castro Street.

All this said, what really got me excited was their wine aisle. They have amazing selection and great prices -- carrying favorite labels such as McManis, Balletto, Castoro Cellars, Dry Creek Vineyards, I could go on and on and on...

I'm thrilled to be a small part of the wine section by providing Sheepish Sommelier reviews for some of their bottles. Two recent recommendations are McManis 2012 Pinot Noir, which has ultra ripe raspberry aroma and a supple finish; and Jaxon Keys Sauvignon Blanc, a super crispy wine that is wonderful with winter foods.

Here's how my five-sheep Sheepish Sommelier rating system breaks down...

I hope you make a visit to Ava's Downtown Market & Deli soon. One trip and I suspect you'll become a regular.
